Danny Manning Lands New College Basketball Coaching Job

After a year away from coaching, former Wake Forest head coach Danny Manning has a new job in college basketball.

Manning will be joining Mark Turgeon’s coaching staff as an assistant at Maryland. The two played together at Kansas in the 1980s, including on the Jayhawks' 1986 Final Four team, ESPN reports.

Manning was the head coach at Wake Forest for six seasons and was fired after a 78-111 run. ESPN reports he reached one NCAA Tournament during his time with the Demon Deacons. In the 2016-2017 season, the team went 19-14 overall and 9-9 in ACC play before being knocked out in the First Four.

Prior to Wake Forest, Manning was the head coach at Tulsa for two seasons, making it to the NCAA Tournament in 2014.

He spent six seasons at Kansas as an assistant coach under Bill Self, where he was thought to be one of the nation's best coaches at developing post players, the article states. He worked for ESPN last season.

After a notable college career, Manning went on to become a two-time NBA All-Star during his 15-year pro career.

He will replace DeAndre Haynes in College Park, ESPN reports. Haynes left earlier this month to join Shaka Smart's staff at Marquette.
