Irene Aldana Misses Weight For UFC Bout Against Yana Kunistkaya
Bantamweight contender Irene Aldana has missed weight ahead of her UFC bout on Saturday against Yana Kunistkaya.
The match was set as part of the main card for UFC 264 in the Women's Bantamweight non-title fight.
The Mexican fighter will still be allowed to square off against Kunistkaya over the weekend, but will now have to "forfeit 30 percent of her purse to Kunistkaya as a penalty for the missed weight," according to the report from MMA Junkie.
Aldana cited sweat retention related to her menstrual cycle as reason for weighing over 3.5 pounds past the non-title limit. Bantamweight cut-off is 135 lb (61.2 kg) for title fights, while non-title fights are set at 136 lb (61.7 kg).
“I want to apologize to my opponent Yana Kunistkaya and her team. I would never do this to take advantage in a fight," announced Aldana via Instagram, in an apology for his first missed weight in five years. "I apologize too to my team, to the UFC, and our followers.”
Facing off against Kunistkaya, who boasts a 14-5 overall MMA record, Aldana (12-4) will join one of the most anticipated nights in UFC as Poirier vs. McGregor 3 will settle a 1-1 record between the Irish champ and The Diamond in Las Vegas this weekend.
