Yankees Pull Off Incredible Triple Play, Third Of The Season
The New York Yankees managed to execute yet ANOTHER triple play and hung on for the win (2-1) against the Oakland A's.
The Yankees' incredible play began when A's catcher Sean Murphy hit a ground ball to third, where Gio Urshela nabbed the out and sent the ball down a sequence, from second to first, for the three consecutive outs.
The Yankees have now tied an MLB record for most triple plays in a season after an incredible sequence cleared the bases in a testy final inning for Aroldis Chapman on Sunday.
The tripartite of outs came only days after their second triple play of the year against the Toronto Blue Jays. Just with a lot less chasing.
The Yankees are now tied for an MLB record with three triple plays in the bag, and plenty of time left in the season for a fourth. Their first of the year came against the Chicago White Sox on May 21, which also resulted in a 2-1 victory.
The 2021 Yankees now join the following teams tied for most triple plays in a season: 2016 White Sox, 1979 Red Sox, 1979 A's, 1965 Cubs, 1964 Phillies, 1924 Red Sox, 1911 Tigers.
The game was a specular ending for both Yankee fans and those celebrating Father's Day at Yankee Stadium.
Before the Father's Day festivities, manager Aaron Boone gave a message to all the dads and Yankees fans tuning into Sunday's game.
“First and foremost, Happy Father’s Day to everyone out there, especially my dad who has modeled a great example of what a father should be and is and was. Obviously, in my family, it’s been a lot. It’s been our livelihood. It’s been something that I’ve been able to share with my brothers, my dad, my grandfather, my mom, who was so involved with all our baseball careers, I guess."
Boone added, “But it’s always been something that’s been a point of the topic of conversation, I would say, there’s been many dinners and meals and family gatherings that the conversation seems to always go back to baseball. And it’s what we know, it’s what we’ve loved, and what we’ve been blessed to be able to make a career out of, in a lot of cases. And we owe so much to this game. Today is certainly a day to celebrate my dad.”
