Tampa Bay Rays Bullpen Catcher Jean Ramirez Dead At 28

The Tampa Bay Rays announced the unexpected passing of Jean Ramirez. Ramirez was pronounced dead on Monday, Jan. 10 at the age of 28.

On Tuesday via Twitter, the Rays broke news of Ramirez's passing and did not provide a cause of death. The organization expressed its grief over the young player who had a bright reputation.

Tampa Bay Rays President of Baseball Operations Erik Neander said Ramirez was known for his "kind heart," working with the Rays for three seasons as a bullpen catcher and catching instructor.

“We extend our deepest sympathy and condolences to Jean’s family,” Neander commented. “He was a caring teammate and friend. He exuded so much joy in all he did, and his kind heart was truly a gift to all. As we process this unexpected and difficult loss, we are grateful for the times we shared with Jean.”

Ramirez was drafted by Tampa Bay in 2016 and endured detours until he re-signed with the Rays in 2019. Rays manager Kevin Cash delivered a statement on Tuesday.

"Jean was an incredible teammate and friend," Cash said. "He brought so much passion and energy each day to our clubhouse and bullpen, and his love for the Rays and baseball was evident to all who interacted with him. He had the biggest heart and most infectious smile. We extend our deepest condolences to his family and friends. Jean will be deeply missed."

Jean's father, Carlos Ramirez, works as an assistant coach for Hawaii Pacific University's baseball program. The two shared a passion for learning and teaching the game.
