Sounds Like Trea Turner Is On The Move, Who Could Land The Star Shortstop?
Nationals star Trea Turner wasn't really on anyone's radar, despite his talent, but now there are reports that he may be on the move. Peter Gammons reports that Washington ownership and Turner "aren't going to do anything long term."
This is like telling a girl you don't see a long-term future, so obviously other suitors are going to circle the waters like a shark. So who could get involved? Most cases point to contenders with strong farm systems, but Trea Turner is worth a look from everyone. It's possible they all give Washington a call on this one.
White Sox
No one's rumored to have made any offers yet, however the White Sox would be a monster fit. Second baseman Nick Madrigal is out for the season with a bad hamstring, which left this roster with a glaring need: middle infield.
What better replacement for a middle infielder than arguably the game's best all-around shortstop? Turner is currently batting .319 with 18 homers and 49 RBIs. Most importantly, he's only struck out 77 times in 2021, which would be ideal in Chicago's contact-first approach to offense implemented by 76-year-old manager Tony La Russa.
Giants
Most baseball fans don't think of the Giants because they aren't winning in a traditional fashion. You look up and down that lineup and don't see a single standout bat that would be responsible for the Giants' two-game lead over the NL West. Now imagine Trea Turner in black and orange.
They're already dominating games with that pitching staff, and then you throw Trea Turner in left or centerfield? He could replace Alex Dickerson in that outfield, for one, and then provide this team with a shot of speed. Pitching, contact-hitters, and speed win championships. Have to imagine that's what the Giants have in mind, given their history.
Yankees
Even though I mentioned yesterday that the Yankees should sell, no one anticipated that Trea Turner would be available. If you can trade Turner for prospects, you do it, regardless of your team's current standings. Of course, you move him if your team is a total stinker, but other than that, Trea Turner would be a game-changer, especially for the Yankees.
Grab Turner so the Yankees can slide Gleyber Torres over to second base, and then allow DJ LeMahieu to man first base. This would make the team a much more efficient defensive unit, not to mention the addition of that bat...
The Yankees have a slew of right-handed power bats that make Trea Turner's contact speed combination that much more impactful. He'll be surrounded by power bats that'll allow him to play the game like he has in Washington. Will Brian Cashman pay the price tag, though? Judging from his extensive past of finding bargains -- don't count on it, Yankee fans.
The MLB trade deadline is July 31 at 4 p.m. eastern, so time's ticking.
