San Diego Padres Have Interest In A Trade For Texas Rangers Slugger Gallo

The San Diego are currently ranked as one of the very top teams in all of Major League Baseball. With a young pitching staff and a couple of heavy hitters on their roster, they currently sit at 36-25, two games back of the San Francisco Giants in the NL West.

The Padres are not staying put though. They know they could use another bat, and there are going to be options out there come the trade deadline.

Last season, San Diego used the trade deadline to acquire frontline starting pitcher Mike Clevinger from the Cleveland Indians in exchange for a number of prospects.

As luck would have it, Clevinger is done for all of 2021 after Tommy John surgery. He's expected to make a full recovery and be ready for 2022.

With him gone for now, the Padres reportedly have their eyes on a player in the 'Heart of Texas' who could come join San Diego and be the slugger they are looking for.

That player is Texas Rangers outfielder Joey Gallo, who is currently hitting .207 with 10 homers and 26 RBI. He's such a free swinger that he leads the AL in walks at 45 and strikeouts at 79.

He may come in and hit big homers, but he's also going to strikeout quite a bit, meaning that it will be up to the Padres to pick their spots on where and when to play him.

The Rangers could use some prospects too. They are 23-38 and in the rear in the AL West. They are 12 games back of the A's in the division, so expect to hear Texas' name when it comes to trades.

“There’s always interest in Joey because he’s a very good player,” Rangers general manager and former Padres pitcher Chris Young said in a radio interview last month.

“But I would not say there’s anything different as compared to the offseason or, from what I understand, going back to last year.”
