Padres OF Tommy Pham Recovering From Surgery Following Stabbing

Padres outfielder Tommy Pham was the victim of a stabbing late on Sunday night in San Diego following an altercation with two individuals, according to Kevin Acee with the San Diego Union-Tribune.

The incident happened outside a restaurant in San Diego after Pham reportedly asked two individuals who were arguing next to his car to move. That request led to his attack, which included Pham being stabbed in the lower back. Further information about the incident is not available at this time.

Pham did undergo surgery soon after the altercation and stabbing, however, and is now considered to be in "good condition" according to a statement released by the Padres on Monday.

“We are aware of the incident last night involving Tommy Pham,” the team said in the statement. "He was treated at UC San Diego Health and is currently in good condition. He is expected to make a full recovery. The San Diego Police Department is actively investigating the incident and we will have no further comment at this time.”

Pham also released his own statement soon after the Padres.

"I'd like to thank the incredible medical staff at UC San Diego Health for taking such great care of me last night. I truly appreciate the hard work of the (San Diego Police Department) as well as they continue their search for the suspects. While it was a very traumatic and eye-opening experience for me, I'm on the road to recovery and I know I'll be back to my offseason training routine in no time."

Pham has been in the Major League for 16 years after being selected by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 16th round of the 2006 amateur draft. Since then, he has played for the Cardinals (2014-18), Tampa Bay Rays (2018-19) and most recently the Padres in 2020.
