Oakland A's Manager Bob Melvin Updates Fans On The Condition Of Ace Chris Bassitt

It was one of the scariest moments of the 2021 MLB season. Oakland A's pitcher Chris Bassitt lay on the ground holding his head after being hit in the face in a game against the Chicago White Sox.

As you can see in the video, Bassitt took a shot off the face and laid on the ground several minutes before he was able to leave the field.

Bassitt fractured cheekbone and maxilla (upper jawbone).

A's manager Bob Melvin said on Monday that Bassitt will have surgery on Tuesday, but that he's already feeling much better overall.

"I just talked to Chris Bassitt this morning, and he's going to have the surgery tomorrow," Melvin said.

"He looks so much better."

One major relief for Bassitt and his family is that his vision has not been damaged, according to reports. Perfect vision is important for the A's ace moving forward.

Bassitt was having a great season for the A's, who continue to push for either the AL West title or at least a wild card in the American League.

At the time of the injury, he was 12-4 with a 3.22 ERA. With Bassitt done for the year, the team has turned to Frankie Montas to be the team's ace.

Montas has been good, going 9-9 with a 3.84 ERA as Oakland continues their playoff push.
