New York Yankees Turn Historic Triple Play

For the first time in their storied history, the New York Yankees have turned two triple plays in the same season. The Bronx Bombers did so by turning the first (follow along with me) 1-3-6-2-5-6 triple play in major league history on Thursday evening. The trifecta of outs occurred, thanks in large part to the awful base running by the Blue Jays.

MLB.com posted the historic sequence to their Twitter account almost instantly.

The Blue-Jay-blunder-turned-Yankee-highlight took place in the first inning of a scoreless game with runners on second and third. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit a chopper down the third base line resulting in any easy throw to first for out number one. That's when things got crazy. Marcus Semien was tagged out debating while whether he wanted to head home or post up on third, and then Bo Bichette was tagged on his way to the hot corner just seconds later.

New York turned their first triple play of the season less than a month ago when the visiting White Sox fell victim to a more traditional triple play in the ninth inning.

Having now turned two triple plays this season, the Yankees have 95 games remaining to try and tie -- or beat -- the Major League record (3) for most triple plays turned by one team in a season. That record is currently shared amongst seven franchises. The White Sox most recently entered the history books in 2016.
