Miggy Hits 500th Homer

It took awhile to go from 499 to 500, but Miguel Cabrera of the Detroit Tigers finally clubbed his 500th career blast on Sunday, putting him in rare MLB air.

His home run on Sunday was his 2,955th career hit. He now sits just 45 short of the 3,000 mark.

The homer off Blue Jays pitcher Steven Matz also tied the game in the sixth inning.

He is the 28th player in MLB history to hit 500 home runs and the fifth player in the past 75 seasons to hit 500 home runs while having a career batting average over .300.

The ever-smiling Cabrera is the the first player to reach the 500 homer mark since September 12, 2015 when Boston big man David Ortiz reached the mark.

The only other current MLB player to reach 500 homers is Los Angeles Dodger Albert Pujols.

Cabrera is a future Hall of Famer, an 11-time All-Star, four-time batting champion and two-time American League MVP. In 2012, he became the first player since Carl Yastrzemsi in 1967 to win the Triple Crown, which means leading the American League in home runs, RBIs and batting average.
