Mets' Taijuan Walker Shows Why The National League Needs A DH

Old school baseball fans love to argue that the National League having no DH requires "more strategy," but Mets pitcher Taijuan Walker really took an axe to that argument. Check out this garbage effort that proves attempting to hit as a pitcher isn't worth the risk of injury:

We have to keep in mind that sports are designed to entertain. Having a pitcher stand at the plate like a Century Bob Torso and watch three fastballs down the chute is entertaining who exactly? The 10-year-old Generation Z audience that barely looks up from their iPads, or the Boomers?

I argue that no one finds this worth a watch.

Walker signed a two-year, $20 million contract with the Mets this offseason, and none of his job description requires him to hit. Sure, National League hitters are technically asked to give their best at the plate, but do the Mets seem concerned with his effort here? The fact that he felt comfortable showing the baseball world how little that at-bat meant to him, answers that.

The at-bat didn't matter because he can't risk injury. God forbid he tries to bunt and breaks his finger -- he may never touch a mound again. You never know. Why should he risk his body making an effort to accomplish a goal that's highly unlikely?

MLB, please give us a universal DH

For entertainment purposes and competitive reasons, give us a freakin' DH. Most of us don't want to see some 6-foot-4 skinny guy take swings like a drunk Wiffle Ball player. It used to be entertaining when we had less to do, but with Netflix and all this world has to offer now, it's outdated.

It's not strategic for a pitcher to try and bunt. They suck at it, always have. Rob Manfred, please get this done so we can have less downtime in the game of baseball.
