Justin Verlander To Have Tommy John Surgery, Likely Out Til 2022

The Houston Astros will be without Justin Verlander for the rest of this season, and most likely all of the 2021 campaign, as the Cy Young winner announced he would be having Tommy John surgery.

“It has become clear that I need Tommy John surgery,” Verlander posted on Instagram. “I was hopeful I would be able to return to competition in 2020. However, during my simulated game unfortunately the injury worsened.

“I’m extremely disappointed but I will not let this slow down my aspirations for my career. I will approach this rehab the only way I know – attack and don’t look back.

“I’m confident that with a proper rehabilitation program and my unwavering commitment that this surgery will ultimately lengthen my career as opposed to shortening it.”

Verlander leads all active pitchers with 226 wins but only appeared in one game this season before suffering what was then considered a forearm strain. Last week, the Astros said that the expected him to return to the rotation for the final week of the season and be available for the playoffs.

The Astros are 25-26 and may not make the playoffs. The current labor agreement ends after the 2021 season, meaning Verlander -- who will be 39 for the start of 2022 -- may have thrown his last pitch if there is an extended stoppage of play.
