Jays And Mets Still Focused On Astros Free Agent Outfielder George Springer

Outfielder George Springer remains one of the top free agents left in Major League Baseball, but a couple teams are zeroing in and hoping to sign the centerfielder.

Those two teams are the Toronto Blue Jays and the New York Mets, with the Jays "making a push" to sign Springer, according to a report from Ben Nicholson-Smith and Shi Davidi of Sportsnet.

Springer, who has been with the Houston Astros for the last seven seasons, is a three-time All-Star looking to cash in at the age of 30.

Last season, Springer hit .265 in 51 games with 14 homers and 32 RBI. In his last full season, he blasted 39 homers, hitting .292 with 96 runs batted in.

The outfielder isn't going to come cheap, though. He's likely to make more than $100 million on a deal that is in the range of five years.

One selling point for the Mets is that, with them, Springer could play close to his native Connecticut. The Mets might not be able to bid as high as the Jays though, due to the offseason additions of shortstop Francisco Lindor, pitcher Carlos Carrasco and catcher James McCann.

Springer is a two-time Silver Slugger and three-time All-Star. He was great during the 2017 Astros run to a title, and was the 2017 World Series MVP, all good selling points for the Jays and Mets.
