ESPN tweeted this morning that they've agreed to release a multi-part documentary on the career of Yankees legend Derek Jeter. It's supposed to be six episodes long, and I know one thing: Jeter's dating life better be three of those episodes.
Jessica Biel, Minka Kelly, Scarlett Johansson, Jessica Alba, Mariah Carey, Victoria's Secret Adrianna Limma...Come on!
He also won five World Series titles in a sport where athletes are satisfied with just one. We can't wait for this.
The only bummer is that it won't be released until 2022. Of course, "The Last Dance" was supposed to drop much later, but celebrities chimed in and pressured an earlier launch. I bring that up because we need our celebrity community to make that magic happen again. Mariah Carey showing up to Yankee Stadium with "Fantasy" blaring in the background needs to happen sooner rather than later.
Seems doubtful we get any clarity on the gift basket rumor, though. ESPN did give us more than expected with Jordan's doc, and hopefully that continues to happen here. It just appears to be too deep of a story for ESPN's coverage. It is Spike Lee, though, so we'll see.
Why this docuseries will be amazing
Derek Jeter was an idol to millions because he embraced the pressure of performing and still remained classy. Sure, we know plenty of classy athletes today, but they don't embrace transparency the way Jeter always did.
When he stunk up the field, he admitted it postgame and took full responsibility. The Yankees fan base loved that. It also didn't hurt that he was 6-foot-3 and good looking. Analytics departments always claim Cal Ripken Jr. was a better player, yet everyone wanted to be Jeter.
Guess there's a market for attractive, winning, and charismatic characters after all! And I hope to God Jeter's diving play in the stands makes it into the docuseries because I was there! We all have our favorite "Derek Jeter" moment, and with six hour-long Spike Lee episodes -- they'll all likely make it in the doc. Let's do this thing.
