DWBye: Mets GM Axed After Driving Drunk

The Atlanta Braves are firing up the party buses for the first time in 26 years, while their National League East rivals, the New York Mets are just plain firing. Late Monday, the Mets announced the firing of GM Zack Scott after less than a year with the team. Scott was charged with driving while intoxicated in August.

Scott had been on paid administrative leave since September 1st, one day after he was cited for driving drunk. The now former-general manager was pulled over in the early hours of August 31st after attending a fundraiser at the home of Mets owner Steve Cohen.

In Scott's lone season with New York, the Mets failed to meet lofty expectations, finishing eight games below .500, good enough for third place in the NL East. Scott was hired last December as the team's assistant GM, but was quickly promoted to the main gig after Jared Porter, the Mets' previous GM, was axed because of his role in a sexting scandal.

The firing of Scott, 44, was announced just hours before Las Vegas Raiders receiver Henry Ruggs III, 22, was involved in a drunk driving accident that resulted in the death of a 23-year-old female.

Scott's firing leaves New York with nearly as many holes in their management team as their lineup. The team had already been seeking a president of baseball operations and must now also find a GM to provide stability to the shaky franchise.

A December 8th trail date has been set for Scott to face charges of DWI and three other traffic violations. He previously pleaded not guilty.
