AL MVP Jose Abreu Being Kept Away From White Sox Team After Positive COVID-19 Test

The Chicago White Sox will be without 2020 AL MVP Jose Abreu for the “next several days” because of a positive COVID-19 test.

Chicago general manager Rick Hahn announced Wednesday that Abreu will be kept away from the team after contracting a 'mild case' of COVID-19 back in January.

“Jose, who is completely asymptomatic, believes he contracted a mild case of the disease in January, which is reinforced by the presence of COVID antibodies in additional testing,” Hahn said in a statement.

“Other than being frustrated, Jose feels great and, like the rest of us, is looking forward to when he rejoins the club in the not too distant future.”

Last season, Abreu had a monster year, winning the MVP by hitting .317 with 19 homers, 60 RBIs, 148 total and bases and 34 extra-base hits.

He's the fourth player in Sox history to take home the league MVP award, joining Frank Thomas (1993-94), Dick Allen (1972) and Nellie Fox (1959).

Abreu was the driving force behind the Sox making their first playoff appearance in 12 seasons, dating back to 2008.

He led the American League in hits, RBIs, slugging percentage, total bases and extra-base hits.
