Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene Fined $48,000 For Not Wearing Mask On House Floor

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene has been fined at least $48,000 since May for not wearing a mask on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives.

The fine was outlined in a letter from the House sergeant at arms to Greene. The letter says the Republican lawmaker, who serves the 14th District of Georgia, was warned in May — and numerous times since — about not wearing a mask, USA TODAY reports.

Greene's office said has been fined 20 times for failing to wear a face covering, with a $500 fine for her first offense and $2,500 for each additional incident. The mask violation letter can be read here.

The fines come from the lawmaker’s congressional salary, but Greene said she compares herself to firefighters, police officers, nurses and other workers fired for refusing to comply with mask mandates during a news conference on their behalf outside the Capitol on Monday, per Axios.

"What kind of representative would I be if I am unwilling to give up my salary?" she told Axios on Tuesday. "And I don't get fired! Like, it's a horrible thing that's happening in our country."

President Joe Biden announced an executive order in January requiring the wearing of masks when around others — among other related precautions recommended by the CDC — by "on-site Federal employees, on-site Federal contractors, and other individuals in Federal buildings and on Federal lands."

Greene told USA TODAY she would continue her "stand on the House floor against authoritarian Democrat mandates, because I don’t want the American people to stand alone.” She compared Democratic lawmakers to “tyrannical dictators with mandates and lockdowns” amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Last month, Greene tweeted she had racked up more than $25,000 in mask fines. She said at the time that she refused “to wear a mask in the chamber where over 80% of Congress is vaccinated and I’m NOT sick," USA TODAY reports.
