Rachel Maddow Says She Needs To 'Rewire' Not To View Unmasked People as 'Selfish Threats'
Change is hard. People need time. Take Rachel Maddow, for example.
The CDC announced Thursday that fully-vaccinated Americans need not wear masks or practice social distancing indoors or outdoors, except under certain circumstances. "Finally," some said. Not Maddow, who declared it will be a process. A rather challenging process.
Maddow has to prepare herself to come across an unmasked citizen and not immediately yell "danger."
"I feel like I'm going to have to rewire myself so that when I see someone out in the world who's not wearing a mask, I don't instantly think, ‘You are a threat,’" Maddow said. "Or, 'You are selfish or you are a COVID denier and you definitely haven't been vaccinated.' I mean, we're going to have to rewire the way that we look at each other."
Luckily for Maddow, if she comes across her colleague Joy Reid, these damning thoughts won't be a problem. Reid doesn't appear to be anywhere close to ready to ditch her mask(s). A few weeks ago, Reid proudly announced to the world that she jogs alone outside with two masks on, even though she’s already been fully vaccinated. Joy Reid, an inspiration to Americans.
My advice: if you happen to cross paths with Maddow in a very rich gathering near New York -- don't blame her if you are judged as a COVID denier. Or even a selfish American. Should she whisper under her breath that you are a threat -- give her a break.
Do your best to ease Maddow's transition. Perhaps carry a spare mask? She surely isn't the only one going through a habit change, especially after last night's likely 2.5 million viewer episode.
