Former NFL Star Kellen Winslow II Agrees to Serve 14 Years for Sex Crimes
Former Cleveland Browns tight end Kellen Winslow II has agreed to a new plea deal and will spend 14 years in prison, USA Today reports.
The plea deal replaces a previous deal from his November 2019 case in which Winslow pled guilty to rape and sexual battery charges to avoid a life sentence.
His previous deal specified a sentencing range of 12 to 18 years behind bars, which was to be determined by the judge after a sentencing hearing — his new deal will punish him with 14 years behind bars.
Winslow agreed to the deal in the case he's accused of sex crimes against five women, including raping a homeless woman, raping an unconscious woman, and assaulting a hitchhiker in a parking lot behind a shopping center.
San Diego County Deputy District Attorney Dan Owens said the jury in Winslow's first trial in spring 2019 was not able to reach a unanimous verdict on all his charges.
Owens told USA Today that Winslow could have gotten an even lighter sentence if he went to a trial again on those same charges.
"Ultimately, we think this was the most appropriate sentence for Mr. Winslow’s conduct, taking those other things into account," Owens told USA Today Friday.
Winslow spent nine seasons in the NFL and was a first round pick by the Cleveland Browns in the 2004 NFL Draft.
Winslow also played for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, New England Patriots and New York Jets, and last saw action in 2013.
Winslow appeared at Friday's hearing remotely — his original sentencing was scheduled in 2020 but was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The final judgment will come at Winslow’s sentencing hearing on March 3, USA Today reports.
