Chris Sale Will Miss Rest Of Season After Bicycle Accident

The Boston Red Sox have not had a good 2022 season. It got even worse Tuesday. News broke that ace starter Chris Sale would officially miss the rest of the season.

Sale suffered a broken wrist in a bicycle accident. The team announced he underwent surgery and is expected to be ready in time for 2023 spring training.

In a year that started with high hopes for a playoff run and possible World Series appearance, Boston has now fallen into last place, 17 games behind the first place New York Yankees.

What might be a more devastating blow to Red Sox fans is that even the lowly Baltimore Orioles have been more competitive in recent months. Baltimore is within a game of the Wild Card, despite bewildering trade deadline moves.

Sale fought his way back from Tommy John surgery several years ago, then fought his way back through a stress fracture in his ribcage, then fought an entire minor league clubhouse just a few weeks ago:

News of the bicycle accident comes on the heels of another hand-related injury. Sale was struck by a batted ball and broke a finger.

If rehabbing one injury was enough to cause him to take apart an entire clubhouse, how angry will he be when trying to recover from two at the same time?

The Red Sox must be equally angry. They signed Sale to a 5-year, $145 million extension that began during the 2020 season.

Since then, Sale's made all of 11 regular season appearances while receiving $90 million in salary. If you're counting at home, that's nearly $8.2 million per appearance.

As incredible as that is for Sale, it's hard to imagine a worse investment for a team than that.
