Beam Me Up: Star Trek's William Shatner Becomes Oldest Person To Go To Space

William Shatner, known to many as Captain James T. Kirk in the "Star Trek" franchise, can now say he's gone where no other man his age has gone before — space.

The 90-year-old actor joined Blue Origin, founded by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos in 2000, for its second human spaceflight.

Shatner and three others were launched in a New Shepard rocket from the aerospace company's West Texas launch site just before 11 a.m. EDT.

"That was unlike anything they described," Shatner was heard saying via a radio link as the capsule parachuted back to Earth.

The crew safely landed back on Earth several minutes later, when Shatner could be heard saying the experience was "unlike anything they described," the outlet reports.

Bezos greeted the passengers with a double thumbs-up outside the landing capsule, followed by the passengers' family and friends, who cheered and applauded, USA TODAY reports.

"Everybody in the world needs to do this," he told Bezos after landing. "That was unbelievable."

Shatner told Bezos that in a way, the experience was "indescribable."

"Not only is it different than what you thought, it happened so quickly," he said. "The impression I had that I never expected to have is the shooting up: There's blue sky ..."

Shatner is now the oldest person to have ever flown to space, beating the record set by the 82-year-old aviation pioneer Wally Funk, who flew on Blue Origin's first crewed flight with the company's founder Jeff Bezos on July 20, Space.com reports.

Along with Shatner, the spaceflight passengers in Blue Origin's second human spaceflight included Blue Origin's vice president of mission and flight operations Audrey Powers, a former NASA engineer and tech entrepreneur Chris Boshuizen and the founder of a clinical trials software company Glen de Vries, according to a news release.

While Boshuizen and de Vries paid for their seats on New Shepard, Blue Origin did not say how much they paid. Powers joined the mission as part of her professional role at Blue Origin, Space.com reports.

Bezos has previously said totals of tickets sold were nearing $100 million, USA TODAY reports.
