Alaska Rattled By 5.3 Earthquake

Thousands in Alaska experienced a 5.3 magnitude earthquake just outside of Anchorage on Saturday.

The area — Point MacKenzie, which is about 8 miles NW of Anchorage — is used to earthquakes, but they are not normally of this magnitude, an official with the National Earthquake Information Center told The Hill. 

Officials say there is no threat of a tsunami, but there is the potential for aftershocks around the region.

The Hill reports that it is not known at this time if there are injuries from the earthquake.

Reports of those who felt the earthquake have come from Point MacKenzie, Anchorage, Eagle River, Knik-Fairview and Whitehorse.

There have been 2,794 people so far who have filed a “felt report” to the United States Geological Survey, the data from its site states reported by The Hill.

The Hill reports the earthquake in Alaska follows a 7.1 magnitude earthquake that hit Japan earlier this month, and no tsunami occurred from the Japan earthquake either.
