Medina Spirit was part of the three-horse team under Bob Baffert entering the 2021 Preakness Stakes.
After an eventful week that saw the contentious trainer Baffert and prized horse come under scrutiny for heightened levels of betamethasone, the horse was cleared to race after heavy monitoring since its positive drug test.
As reported by OutKick, the drug’s effect on horses to reduce pain and swelling classified as a performance-enhancing drugs that could strip the horse of its Kentucky Derby win. The Hall of Famer Baffert had his own reasons as to why the horse was targeted after its win.
Baffert’s three horses — Medina Spirit, Concert Tour, and Beautiful Gift — were cleared for Saturday’s race but the trainer did not attend the event in Baltimore.
Medina Spirit entered the race at 3-1, while Concert Tour entered at 4-1.
Attendance at Pimlico Race Course was estimated to be at about 10,000 fans, which was full capacity according to the COVID-restricted number.
The Belmont Stakes, third race of the Triple Crown, is set to take place Saturday, June 5.
