Early Voting Wins 2022 Preakness Stakes
Breaking news: Early Voting has won the 147th running of the Preakness Stakes on Saturday evening.
Jockey Jose Ortiz was at a loss of words after crossing the finish line first at the Run for the Black-Eyed Susans, his first victory at the Preakness Stakes. Just the fourth race in Early Voting's career, but one that will be talked about forever, as he held off betting favorite Epicenter, who finished as the runner-up in the Kentucky Derby earlier this month and now at the Preakness Stakes.
It's quite the birthday present for horse owner Seth Klarman, who has his second winner at the Preakness Stakes, after Cloud Computing won in 2017. Klarman's decision to not race Early Voting at the Kentucky Derby was part of the plan, with this moment in mind.
Klarman said after the race that the pace at the Kentucky Derby would've been "suicidal" for Early Voting. As of now, he didn't commit to having Early Voting in the field at the Belmont Stakes on Saturday, June 11, the final leg of the Triple Crown.
Kentucky Derby long shot winner Rich Strike notably did not compete in the Preakness Stakes.
