Alabama Latest To Ban Transgender Athletes From Competing In Sports Based On Identity

Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey signed a bill Friday that will ban transgender athletes at public high schools from competing in sports with teams that match their gender identities, making the state among the latest to implement the measure.

Alabama's House Bill 391 will forbid any "biological male" from participating on a female team if there is a male team with the same sport. The same rule applies to females. The bill does allow for transgender students to compete on co-ed teams.

So far, 31 states have introduced such legislation. Tennessee, Mississippi and now Alabama are included in that group.

"The bill, and others like it introduced in numerous states, claims that people assigned a male gender at birth have physical and competitive advantages over cisgender women," Newsweek wrote.
