Woke USWNT Star Megan Rapinoe Continues To Prove America Is Not A Bad Place

Picture having to hear about oppression and redefining society's social ladder from a millionaire soccer player wearing a blazer, gold chain, and purple hair to a simple interview.

U.S. Olympic women's soccer star Megan Rapinoe has lectured millions of Americans across the nation -- who are fully responsible for providing for themselves and their families day to day -- about living in a country that actively oppresses its people based on sexual orientation, gender or race, and that standing for the flag supports such oppression.

Newly announced as a spokesperson for the highly popular women's brand Victoria's Secret, Rapinoe continues to reap the benefits of a capitalist system while her rhetoric denounces it. This time her activism will be used for the lingerie company's new mission, which abandons generalizations of a "sexy" woman or its Angel concept for the sake (or illusion) of equity across all body types.

"The Victoria’s Secret Angels, those avatars of Barbie bodies and playboy reverie, are gone," said the New York Times report discussing the 35-year-old soccer player's new vision for the brand.

The feature covers Rapinoe and the new wave of spokespeople hired by the company to "redefine the version of 'sexy' that Victoria’s Secret represents (and sells) to the masses." Rapinoe hopes to change the company from within by leaving behind imagery of an attractive, healthy female body, which she considers "patriarchal, sexist, viewing not just what it meant to be sexy but what the clothes were trying to accomplish through a male lens and through what men desired. It was very much marketed toward younger women.”

Though Rapinoe has long presented her platform as a place for America's oppressed to gather and redefine "tyrannical" American institutions, her annual six-figure salary, plus endorsements, weakens its foundation.

When Rapinoe made news in 2016 for choosing to kneel during the national anthem at the start of an international match, the soccer star said the following about her views on America and what her activism means to her:

"It was a little nod to Kaepernick and everything that he’s standing for right now. I think it's actually pretty disgusting the way he was treated and the way that a lot of the media has covered it and made it about something that it absolutely isn't. Being a gay American, I know what it means to look at the flag and not have it protect all of your liberties. It was something small that I could do and something that I plan to keep doing in the future and hopefully spark some meaningful conversation around it."

Rapinoe has yet to have any meaningful positive effect on American culture, so it's puzzling that Victoria's Secret would give her the reins to rebrand its mission or target audience. But thanks to her privilege, Megan Rapinoe can wake up one day and land this position with only fortune cookie wisdom and a multi-million dollar net worth.
