'Lord Of The Rings' Star Leaves Door Open For Potential Return For New Movie

Viggo Mortensen isn't ruling out a potential return to "The Lord of the Rings" universe.

A new movie - titled "The Hunt for Gollum" - will be released by Warner Bros. in 2026, and Andy Serkis will return to play the legendary J.R.R. Tolkien character.

The plot of the highly-anticipated movie "will be Gandalf and Aragorn searching the wild for Gollum, desperately trying to find him before Sauron does."

That means someone is going to have to be cast to play the same character Viggo Mortensen did in the original saga…..unless he returns to do it himself.

Viggo Mortensen talks potential "Lord of the Rings" return.

Mortensen was cast in his iconic role in the first three hit movies right around 25 years ago. It's been a quarter of a century. Would he be open to reprising the role now that he's 65? He's open to it, but he's definitely not sold.

"Sure. I don't know exactly what the story is, I haven't heard. Maybe I'll hear about it eventually. I like playing that character. I learned a lot playing the character. I enjoyed it a lot. I would only do it if I was right for it in terms of, you know, the age I am now and so forth. I would only do it if I was right for the character. It would be silly to do it otherwise," Mortensen told QG when asked if he would return for "The Hunt for Gollum."

As a huge "LOTR" fan, I'm willing to admit that having Mortensen return to a timeline that takes place *BEFORE* the original saga doesn't make a lot of sense.

How are they going to age him down several decades to make it realistic? I'm sure it can be done, but is it worth it? The answer is almost certainly no.

Don't get me wrong. I think Mortensen was the best part of the original three movies. He was epic as Aragorn. Nobody better could have been cast in the role.

However, we're talking about a movie that will come out 27 years after production and casting started in 1999. If the rest of the cast - minus Andy Serkis - is likely being completely re-cast, then the same should happen for Aragorn.

Think I'm completely wrong and you want to see Mortensen reach a deal to return? I'm all ears. Let me know your thoughts at David.Hookstead@outkick.com.
