VIDEO: Private Jet Crashes In Naples, FL, Leaving Two Dead
A private jet crashed on I-75 in Naples, FL, leaving two of the five passengers dead.
At around 3:21 p.m, EST, a Bombardier Challenger 600 jet crashed in Collier County. Reports confirmed that the Naples Airport Tower had contact with the pilot before the crash.
Authorities said that the pilot called in an emergency after losing control of both engines of the plane (the Naples Airport said only one engine was lost). The plane had departed from Fort Lauderdale earlier in the day, and attempted to make an emergency landing in Naples once the situation worsened.
But with less than a minute to go to get to the runway, the plane crashed and fell from roughly 250 feet in the air.
Naples-area resident Jinny Johnson was traveling on I-75 and saw the wreckage minutes after the crash.
"All of a sudden I saw a lot of black smoke," Johnson said. "It was pitch black. As I got closer, the smoke got a little lighter. And then I saw flames."
Authorities said that the plane did not run out of fuel, and that the fire in the video was caused by the burning fuel.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said I-75 will be closed in both directions between MM 105 and 107 for a full 24 hours.
Fortunately, three people survived the crash, but no details emerged on whether or not they were injured.
The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are in charge of this investigation and will provide more details.
