VA Secretary: V-J Day Kiss Photo 'Is Not Banned' At VA Facilities

Was there an attempt to ban the iconic V-J Day kiss photo from Veteran Affairs facilities over concerns that the kiss wasn't consensual?

That's the drama that's playing out Tuesday across social media where a alleged memorandum from a VA administrator is making the rounds, but VA Secretary Denis McDonough hopped on Twitter to clear the air.

"Let me be clear: This image is not banned from VA facilities - and we will keep it in VA facilities," McDonough tweeted Tuesday morning.

But what McDonough doesn't address is whether there was an attempt to remove the image of a sailor kissing a woman in the streets of Times Square on August 14, 1945.

McDonough also doesn't address whether the memorandum being passed around social media and being attributed to RimaAnn O. Nelson, Assistant Under Secretary for Health for Operations, is even legitimate.

"In celebrating the end of World War II and the valiant service of our Veterans, facilities should seek alternative photographs that capture the spirit of victory and peace without compromising the VA's commitment to a safe and respectul environment," the supposed memorandum from Rima O. Nelson reads.
