True Romance: A Summer Of Threesomes Is On The Way, Mom Slept With Son's Wife & A Reader Submission

We're back for another edition of True Romance With SeanJo.  As the weather starts to heat up, so do the sorted tales of romance.  This week is the perfect example of that.

A new movie that hit theaters a few weeks ago is to thank for bringing some of that our way.  It's sparked what sounds like a summer of threesomes in New York City.

Now that's one way to boost tourism.

Sure, that sounds like a lot of fun, but I wouldn’t be properly fulfilling my duties here if I didn't also document some love gone wrong.  You have to keep a healthy balance after all.

We can't just fill our heads with thoughts of taking a trip to New York for a shot at a romantic threesome with a stranger.  We already know that those always work out as planned.

So we have to occasionally dip into some hurt feelings.  Like when a married woman is called the name of her husband's ex.  We've got to keep it real, it's not all happily ever after out there.

Let's dive right in and hopefully make it out the other end better people.  That's all we can hope for.

Remember I want to hear from you.  If you have a true romance story you want to share or if you want to comment on anything, send them my way at sean.joseph@outkick.com.

Summer of threesomes

The folks in New York are taking note of the movie Challengers and the threesome action that is taking place in the sports romance movie that hit theaters in April.

I haven’t seen the movie myself, so I can't tell you if it's worth the hype or not.  But some horned up New Yorkers have seen it, and they're telling the NY Post they're looking forward to their own crowded bedroom situations.

The movie stars Zendaya, Josh O’Connor and Mike Faist as three tennis players who find themselves in a love triangle.  At one point in the movie, the three of them end up in bed together.

That's enough for New York residents to go on record making it known that they're down for a summer of threesomes.  There are plenty of ways to make that happen too.

Those who are into apps will find one for such encounters.  Although the traditional way for a night of sharing is still preferred by some over the impersonal use of technology.

"I wonder if it’s drilling threesomes into our subconscious," Upper East Side resident Ruby Archbold, 27, said of the movie Challengers.

Greenpoint resident Emily Kelly*, 27, told The Post, "I’m new to threesomes; my first one was about a month and a half ago."

She's seen the movie twice already and used an app to dip her toes in the threesome waters.  That's not how Archbold prefers to roll.  She's looking for more spontaneous connections this summer.

"You’re making out at a club with your hookup, and then he turns to your [female] friend, you’re all drunk and it just happens — you go home together," Archbold said of the situations she says make "for the best stories."

She's single and into whatever comes her way.  She added, "I’m equally open to threesomes with men and women."

Kelly, on the other hand, says having a threesome with two men was "one of her biggest fantasies."  She found the sexual tension between the two male characters the most captivating part of the movie.

Talk about a glowing endorsement for a movie.  If they were hoping to spark a summer of threesomes when they made it, they hit the nail on the head.

Wife wants divorce after husband called her his ex's name

Now from the happier side of romance to a little sadness.  I'm not sure how this happens, but calling someone you're in bed with the wrong name does happen.

When a married man called his wife his ex's name, she was ready to draft up divorce papers.  The 28-year-old woman said that she and her 29-year-old husband have been married for just over a year, and been together for two years total.

They met at a bar 6 months after his breakup from his ex of 7 years.  They waited another 8 months after they met to start their relationship.  By the time they started dating, she was already head over heels in love with him.

Fast-forward to a recent night out when he came home after a few too many drinks and there's suddenly trouble in paradise.  One thing led to another when he got home and as they were hooking up he said his ex-girlfriend's name.

"After he was done I don't think he realized what he did since he continued with our usual routine or maybe he did and was trying to pretend he didn't do it.  I could feel my blood run cold at that moment," the upset wife said, according to The Mirror.

"She was his second girlfriend and they almost dated for 7 years.  They were even talking about marriage.  But she got a good job out of the town and he didn't want to leave the town and his parents.  So they broke up."

Adding a layer of complexity to the matter is the fact that his ex is also his sister's best friend and the two families are close to one another.  The wife was understandably upset by this and avoided her husband for several days.

A few days later, they bumped into his ex, and it was the first time that the wife realized the "uncanny similarities between us."  She felt like she had been a replacement for his ex and decided to confront him about that.

"I asked him if I was just a replacement for his ex.  Was all the time he spent with me he spent it thinking I was his ex," she continued.  "And his answer was a look of guilt.  He didn't even have the decency to say no."

He finally admitted that he approached her that night at the bar when they first met because she reminded him of his ex.  She responded by asking for a divorce.

Having a type is one thing.  A lot of people do.  Seeking people out because they look like your ex is a whole different can of worms.

It's also not something you willingly admit if you're trying to crawl out of the dog house.  Unfortunately, these two were doomed from the start.  It happens, but it's nothing a summer of threesomes can't cure.

Married woman decides she's polyamorous

I hate to go back-to-back disaster on you this week, but I felt like it was needed to knock everyone down a notch or two from the high of realizing there's a summer of threesomes about to swallow New York City.

This one also involves booze, an ex, and a partner left trying to figure out what happened.  A married man explains how a night of drinking led to his wife flirting with her ex-boyfriend before figuring out six months later that she was polyamorous.

The man explained on Reddit how his marriage took a turn ten years ago.  He said, "Ten years ago my wife of ten years drunk flirted with an ex boyfriend one night, and six months later decided she was poly.  She said it was a revelation, and she’d never felt more like herself being able to love and bang multiple dudes."

An interesting revelation on his wife's part.  Despite the fact that his wife wanted more partners, he didn't immediately leave.  He continued, "Our daughter was in 11th grade, and we both taught her.  I stayed for two years trying to learn to make it work."

"During that time she said lots of really cruel things to me.  (I’m fat) ‘I’m ready for the 200lb man I deserve.  I don’t want to take care of you when you get sick.  When men I find attractive complement me, it makes me feel better than when you do.'"

He did eventually leave and admitted to committing sins of his own during their marriage.  But he had never been cruel to her.

"I was glad she’d learned more about who she was, and I wished her well," he added.  "Go dancing, singing, traveling, f*cking, all the things."

It didn't take long for his now ex-wife to land on her feet and realize she was actually a one man at a time woman again.  She was engaged within 6 months and no longer polyamorous.

Ten years later and this guy is still going through it.  He wrapped up his story by saying, "the deep betrayal has altered who I am.  She deserves every ounce of misery that comes her way."

A classic case of hurt people hurting people.

Mom slept with son's wife

Now we've been through a couple of romances that have gone wrong and this one lives a little more in the gray area.  On one hand, we have betrayal and all that goes along with it.  On the other hand, we have a classic story of romance.

A woman told the story about how her mother was caught sleeping with her brother's wife.  It sounds a lot like love at first sight for the mom and wife, which is a heartwarming twist to the cheating story.

"So my brother (25 M) meets his wife (25 F) in his last year of school.  The two of them got engaged very soon after meeting only about 4-5 months (this is how people in our culture usually get married).  During the time that they were engaged they would spend a lot of time together but they were never allowed to be completely alone together until they were married (again another culture thing)," she explained.

"So this meant that she spent a lot of time at my house where either me, my sister, or my mom would stay with them.  So we all got pretty comfortable around each other and this is where it started to get weird."

The 44-year-old mom got too friendly with her son's soon-to-be wife.  They went from sitting next to one another to full on cuddling when they were together.  They were also constantly FaceTiming one another.

This kind of behavior continued throughout the engagement.  The family would joke about the two of them being together, but never thought it reached the point of them being lovers.

That was until they found evidence of that.  The man's two sisters came home after their brother's wife and mother had been home all day and found a sex toy in their mother's bedroom.

They took that as confirmation of a relationship between their mom and their sister-in-law and decided to let their brother know what they had found.

"We both know that they were the only two home all day and they were completely alone.  Me and my sister go back and forth on what we should do and probably two days later we tell our brother what we found," she said.  "He was quick to believe us because he also saw all the red flags."

He wasted no time in asking his wife for a divorce.  On top of that, the sisters uncovered more evidence on their mom's laptop.  There were inappropriate pictures, videos, and messages from their sister-in-law to their mom.

Confronted with the evidence, the sister-in-law confessed to it all.  She had been hooking up with her husband's mom.

The story ends there, but I'd like to think that, despite the marriage falling apart, the mom and her son's ex were able to make things work.  Love will find a way, no matter the obstacles it has to overcome.

True Romance story

Speaking of love finding a way, we've got a reader submission that drills this point home.

Is there heartache?  Yes, but a failed marriage was able to bring a couple of people together and that's the rainbow after the storm.

Had a friend whose old college buddy moved back to New Jersey after they both attended Florida State. His buddy would visit he and his wife from time to time, and little did he know that his now ex-wife was having an emotional relationship via text message.

This is back in the mid 2000s before the iPhone, so imagine his surprise when he got, their monthly cell phone bill and saw that she had texted with his buddy over 3,000 times in a single month.

They tried to work it out, until he found out that she was booking a flight to visit his buddy and their marriage dissolved. At least they didn’t have kids.

Like I said when I introduced this one, a marriage didn't make it, but romance did.  I'm sure that, on top of the marriage that was lost, the situation also ruined a friendship.

Let's not focus on that.  Let's focus on the two people who found each other along the way and were willing to risk it all for a chance to be together.

That's all for this week.  Let me know what you think about any of the other stories of unconventional romance in this week's edition.  Send me your comments or your own true romance stories at sean.joseph@outkick.com.
