'Top Gun' Fans Hit With Disappointing Update On Third Movie

"Top Gun" fans shouldn't expect to see a new movie in the near future.

"Top Gun: Maverick" was a monster success when it hit theaters in 2022. The film that saw Tom Cruise return as Maverick earned just under $1.5 billion at the box office, and it certainly felt like the adrenaline-filled movie brough Hollywood back to life after the pandemic.

Following its outrageous success, it was announced that a third film with Cruise and "Maverick" cast members is in the works.

Unfortunately, fans might be waiting a long time.

Third "Top Gun" movie might not hit theaters for a long time.

When will Cruise return to the cockpit for the third time to smoke some bad guys? Get ready for a very long wait.

"We’ve got some interesting ideas we’ve talked to Tom Cruise about, but we don’t have a script yet. It will be a while," "Top Gun" producer Jerry Bruckheimer told Deadline when asked for an update on the third installment in the legendary saga.

His comments match up with what he told ScreenRant back in March when he said the following:

"We have a story. Joe Kosinski had a wonderful story idea for it, and he (Tom Cruise) said I really like that, so we’re developing it. But you never know when it’s going to get made because Tom is so busy. He’s doing Mission: Impossible right now, he’s got a picture after it. Hopefully, we’ll get a screenplay that he loves, and we’ll be back in the air again."

Well, this definitely isn't the news fans were waiting for. We want to see a new "Top Gun" movie ASAP. "Top Gun: Maverick" was arguably the best movie of 2022.

It was unapologetically pro-America, and in our current climate, that's about as rare as a unicorn sighting. Not only was it pro-America, but the film literally reminded people why we love movie theaters so much.

I remember when I saw it opening weekend. My local theater was packed, and that's definitely something that hadn't happened up to that point since the pandemic started.

Now, fans are being told to get ready for a very long wait until we see Cruise zipping through the sky as Maverick for a third time.

It's certainly not ideal, but as long as it's a fun film, I think we can stomach a long wait. Let me know your thoughts at David.Hookstead@outkick.com.
