Thursday Night Mowing League 2024: Week 9 - The Heat Dome Builds, But It Won't Break Us

The crippling heat dome will not stop league members from laying stripes

To say I'm proud is an understatement.

As 250 million, or whatever number Good Morning America likes to use in the morning to scare viewers, grapple with the crippling heat, league members saw it as a challenge in Week 9.

What you'll see as you scroll down is the determination of league members across this country who will not allow the meteorologists and their wives/husbands scare them into giving up. There's grass to cut and it's going to get cut.

Yes, we had a few guys like Homebrew Bill in Nebraska taking the night off, but let's not forget that Homebrew Bill could've died back in the Spring when he was in the hospital. This guy needs time off. He's like a guy who starts every five days for years and years. He needs to take a personal day from time to time.

But then you have guys like shirtless Mike Freshwater, a retiree, who got out there in the sizzling Dayton, OH weather to lay some beautiful stripes. He's firmly in the grasps of the heat dome right now.

The same goes for Timmy2Cuts out of SW Ohio. He got dialed in last night and laid what some people are calling the best stripes of his life. Some are asking if his lawn is on some sort of PEDs.

Then there's Reid in Illinois.

I've been waiting for Reid to push through and into the Top 5. Last night was his moment. He joined the shirtless Texas high school coaches mafia and showed off his Make Lawns Great Again hat.

BOOM, you're in.

It helps that Reid never (that I know of) misses a Thursday night. He's steady.

Come and Take It: Ann Arbor

Let's go to the Communist State of Ann Arbor, Michigan where you could be fined this summer for using a gas-powered leaf blower between June 1 and September 30. Violators will be fined $100 the first time. Additional violations can cost between $250 or more.

Gas-powered blowers will be allowed between October 1 and May 30.

Then, in 2028, gas-powered blowers will be banned outright.

Communist Ann Arbor has even set up a hotline for people to rat out their neighbors.

Meanwhile, in Communist New Jersey, it sounds like they're about to do the same thing.

What's the future of leaf blowers? Silencers?

Would you buy one of these?

BUY! BUY! BUY!

Mowing Reports From Around The Country

- Benny from Yukon, Oklahoma writes:

Happy League Night!!!

Routine league night today. Edge/Mow/Blow all done with no delays, no drama. The #31 Leinenkugel Summer Shandy Ego mower handled business efficiently. Thanks to Kona Big Wave for providing the hydration this week.

RECAP:

89 degrees

Partly sunny

Light southern breeze

Dan Bongino podcast provided the entertainment/news/solitude.

CREW CHIEF REPORT:

Maintained deck level 5 this week. The Bermuda grew fast with the daily 90 degree temps this past week. Mowing pattern was a N-S direction.

Hope everyone has a successful league night. Keep the blades sharp and beer cold!

- Sean C. in Granger, IN stays hot in the mowing department:

Congrats on getting the pool back up and going.  You’d hate to miss these prime pool days. I know you mentioned yesterday about us being in the midst of the "dog days of summer", and I agree.

To me, it's not about the date on the calendar, it's about the stretch of weather.  And it's been HOT the last couple of weeks.  Don't get me wrong, I love it, but the heat and dryness have definitely put stress on the lawn.

I've been doing a good job with the watering schedule (I'm on well water, so I'm not going broke trying to water my lawn 1.5 times a day), but there are still spots that can't keep up.  I was debating mowing, but I just raised the deck as high as possible, and just did a little trim last night.  It turned out ok.
But after my mow, I found another event to attend last night that could potentially use the same TNML moniker. The Thursday Night Midget (wrestling) League. I guess technically they call it "Micro" wrestling, but it works just the same.

It was pretty entertaining. But potentially the most interesting part of the night is that one of the micro wrestlers was a dead ringer for Jemele Hill! And trust me, the Micro version of Jamele was WAY more entertaining.

- Indy Daryl emails:

Good morning! With little to know rain in the last week, no rain in the foreseeable forecast, temps pushing 100, and last week’s stripes still visible, I decided to call it, and take the DNM. Instead I offer a sunrise picture from my run this morning and picture of my wife’s beautiful daisies and cone flowers. I hope everyone had a great league night!!
