Target Forced To Pull Black History Month Book That Misidentified 3 Civil Rights Leaders
A customer first pointed out the errors in a video posted to TikTok.
Uh-oh, Target is in trouble again.
The retail chain pulled a children's book from its Black History Month collection this week after a customer noticed the book mislabeled three Civil Rights icons.
A U.S. history teacher named Issa Tete first pointed out the errors in the "Civil Rights Magnetic Learning Kit" in a video posted to TikTok on Tuesday. In the video, Tete showed the magnets misidentified three civil rights icons: American sociologist and historian W.E.B. Du Bois, author and educator Booker T. Washington, and historian and journalist Carter G. Woodson.
Du Bois' image was labeled as Woodson, Woodson was labeled as Washington and Washington was labeled as Du Bois.
"I get it, mistakes happen," Tete said. "But this needs to be corrected ASAP ... I don't know who's in charge of Target, but these need to be pulled off the shelves, like, immediately."
A Target spokesperson acknowledged the issue, saying the book will no longer be available in stores or online. The retail chain also notified Bendon, the book's publisher, about the errors.
Tete — whose video has now racked up more than a million views — said she's grateful Target took immediate action.
"I was not going to let that slide for my 200 students, and I was not going to let that slide for my two babies who I am responsible (for) teaching," Tete said in a follow-up video Thursday.
Good on her for catching it. Still, it's pretty remarkable not a single person at the publishing company bothered to fact check the book before mass producing it, marketing it as educational material and sending it off to a gigantic nationwide retail chain.
