Steven Spielberg’s Production Company Reaches Deal With Netflix
One of the greatest directors in movie history and the world’s most prominent streaming service have reached an agreement and may soon be together under one roof. Per a Netflix press release, Amblin Partners, the production company Steven Spielberg founded and chairs, will release “multiple new feature films per year.”
Spielberg, who has previously criticized direct-to-streaming movie distribution released the following statement: At Amblin, storytelling will forever be at the center of everything we do, and from the minute and I started discussing a partnership, it was abundantly clear that we had an amazing opportunity to tell new stories together and reach audiences in new ways. This new avenue for our films, alongside the stories we continue to tell with our longtime family at Universal and our other partners, will be incredibly fulfilling for me personally since we get to embark on it together with Ted, and I can’t wait to get started with him, , and the entire Netflix team.
Amblin was behind the Netflix original The Trial of the Chicago 7, which began streaming in the fall of 2020. However, this partnership doesn’t necessarily mean that new films directed by Spielberg will soon populate Netflix since Amblin does produce films by other directors as well.
Per the USA Today, Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos complimented Spielberg’s work -- which includes classics like Jurassic Park, Saving Private Ryan and Schindler’s List -- and shared the company’s excitement surrounding the partnership: “Steven is a creative visionary and leader and, like so many others around the world, my growing up was shaped by his memorable characters and stories that have been enduring, inspiring, and awakening. We cannot wait to get to work with the Amblin team and we are honored and thrilled to be part of this chapter of Steven’s cinematic history.”
Spielberg’s next movie, West Side Story, is scheduled to premiere in theaters this December.
