Social Media Roasts BET Awards For Honoring O.J. Simpson

Of all the people that shouldn’t have gotten recognized at the BET Awards last night, O.J. Simpson tops that list.

And yet somehow, he did.

The BET Awards are an annual show dedicated to highlighting Black entertainers for their contributions to the entertainment industry. One of the categories for the evening was "In Memoriam," which Tia Mowry introduced as an honor to "the Black excellence that we unfortunately lost this year."

According to USA Today, she also said that, "It's never easy to say goodbye to those who influence us, but we can take a moment to celebrate and acknowledge their contributions to the culture." She also said that those featured "changed how our artistry is seen and left us with a legacy that we will always remember."

Somehow, OJ Simpson made the cut. 

Yes, that same OJ Simpson who was acquitted in criminal court but found responsible in civil court for the murder of his wife and her friend. I guess that qualifies as leaving a legacy everyone will "always remember." But I'm not sure that's what the folks at BET really had in mind.

Social media predictably turned up the heat and roasted the BET Awards for its ridiculous move.

"lol OJ Simpson in memoriam for anything is WILD no matter how you slice it," one user said.

Look, the guy did die. There's no denying that that happened back in April. Just like there's no denying he is more infamous than famous. But do we really have to remember him alongside other, you know, non-criminals?
