Sitcom Mount Rushmore Gets Heated, As Clay Travis, Will Cain and OutKick Writers Weigh In

NBC announced plans last week to relaunch "The Office." The series will follow the same signature mockumentary format, set at a "dying historic Midwestern newspaper" office with volunteer reporters.

The news intrigued me. "The Office" is one-fourth of the Mount Rushmore of sitcoms, along with "Seinfeld," "Friends," and "The Simpsons."

My (impressive) Mount Rushmore sparked quite the debate. My list wasn't too popular with the masses.

Clay Travis weighed in with his list.

"My four would be: Seinfeld, The Cosby Show, Andy Griffith, and I Love Lucy. I think it has to be multi-generational," Clay said. "My four personal favorites: Curb, Veep, Seinfeld and The Office (Honorable mention for Entourage if it counts as one)."

Before we move forward: no, "Entourage" does not count.

I thought Clay's Mount Rushmore was a bit – dare we say – dated.  "I Love Lucy" ended in 1957.

But as I progressed to make fun of Clay in the OutKick Slack channel, other OutKick writers came to his defense. They bashed my list.

"I'm more on board with Clay's list," Amber Harding said in response. "Yours is good, but it's only in the last 20-30 years. Gotta consider the classics! And I Love Lucy is my all-time favorite."

Amber later defended Clay again on our editorial Zoom call. "Bobby, your list was good, but you could tell it was written by someone in their 20s."

Mark Harris, agreed. "Andy Griffith is a classic (i may or may not have been forced to watch it as a kid)," he said.

That's when the conversation spiraled, as Geoff Clark argued that cartoons – like "The Simpsons" – do not count. He is obviously wrong. But I let him spew his nonsense.

And, there's Will Cain.

Will discussed my Mount Rushmore on "The Will Cain Show" on Monday, reading his list aloud: "M*A*S*H," "Cheers," Seinfeld" and "The Office."

We agreed on two of the four. But there is no sitcom more overrated than ""M*A*S*H."

Sorry.

Will's esteemed executive producer, Patrick Hatten, also released his Mount Rushmore of sitcoms, listing "Seinfeld, "Curb Your Enthusiasm," "The Larry Sanders Show," and "Louis."

Yet before you criticize Patrick for his list – @TheDeuce – understand his Mount Rushmore was more thoroughly thought-out than others.

I'll let him explain.

Patrick is currently working on a documentary called #WhatIsASitcom. (Not really, but he thinks he is.)

At least the consequences seem to all agree that "Seinfeld" is on Mount Rushmore. "Seinfeld" is the greatest sitcom to date. Argue with a wall.

Anyway, send me your sitcom Mount Rushmore on X, @burackbobby.

I stand by my list.
