'Self Reliance' Is A Criminally Underrated Comedy About A Deadly Game | REVIEW

"Self Reliance" is a top-notch comedy/drama that you've probably never heard of.

The film stars and is directed by former "New Girl" actor Jake Johnson, and centers around his character Tommy being given $1 million dollars if he can stay alive for a month while assassins hunt him.

It's a deadly game for the dark web, but there's a twist. He's not allowed to be killed unless he's alone. What does that drive Tommy to do?

He has to find someone to be with him at all times, or risk being killed under the rules of the game.

"Self Reliance" is simply a ton of fun.

I stumbled across the movie a couple weeks back following its January release on Hulu looking for something to watch on a bit of a stay-in date night.

Ultimately, my girlfriend chose something else, but I was intrigued after watching the trailer. I finally was able to crush the film with Jake Johnson playing Tommy, and I can report it's definitely worth watching.

The reviews of the film are pretty lukewarm. Ignore them, and do yourself a favor. Grab a bucket of popcorn and dive in.

Tommy's master plan initially revolves around finding a homeless man to be at his side at all times after his family doesn't believe he's a participant in this deadly game. They think he's crazy. Eventually, a woman named Maddy - played by the amazing Anna Kendrick - reaches and claims she's also playing the deadly game.

He now has his plan. He can hitch his wagon to Maddy and guarantee they both win, but many things aren't as they appear on the surface. That's about as much as I can say without spoiling the entire back half of the movie.

What I can say without ruining the film is that Johnson and Kendrick both crushed it in their respective roles. "Self Reliance" isn't my typical genre of movie. Not even close. I like really dark and gritty entertainment like "True Detective" and "Masters of the Air."

However, Johnson was amazing in "New Girl" and Anna Kendrick…..is Anna Kendrick. Why not give it a chance? That's the mindset I had going in, and I'm glad I gave it a shot.

The 90 minutes fly by. You'll find yourself laughing, clinging to your seat wondering if Tommy will die and you find out the film is about a lot more than surviving assassins.

Also, can we take a moment to give Anna Kendrick some respect? Wildly underrated as an actress and incredibly entertaining.
