Scientists Are Trying To Deflect Sunlight (?) In The Name Of Fighting Climate Change
Climate alarmists are on the frontlines in the fight against climate change, while other, more pressing issues like a flood of illegal immigrants and artificial intelligence are overlooked.
Of course, the Earth has gone through many changes in climate over the years long before humans ever poked their dumb heads out of caves. Of course, it's more urgent this time — unlike the other changes that occurred over the last billion years — and some folks are trying to do something about it.
Did someone say shoot aerosol particles into the air to brighten clouds and reflect the sun back into space, from whence it came?!
…no?
Well, that's what they're trying and calling it "solar radiation modification."
According to The New York Times, the idea involves launching salt aerosols of specific sizes into the air in a bid to change the composition of clouds.
How badly could this go wrong except catastrophically?
Look, this may shock you, but I'm not a scientist — especially not a climatologist or meteorologist.
However, I don't know why people think the best way to solve an issue with the climate caused in part by pollution… is more pollution.
That same New York Times article mentions that other attempts to flip the switch and put the Earth's climate on a different track have ranged from "sucking carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere to adding iron to the ocean in an effort to store carbon dioxide on the sea floor."
Guys… there's not going to be a quick fix. The planet is not a jukebox and you're not the Fonz. You can't just hit it and get it to start working the way you want.
Cloud Brightening Is Such A Bad Idea, Even The White House Wants You To Know They're Not In On It
Fortunately, others realize. And in fact, this idea of cloud brightening is so bad, that even the Biden administration wanted to make it clear that they had nothing to do with it.
"The U.S. government is not involved in the Solar Radiation Modification (SRM) experiment taking place in Alameda, CA, or anywhere else," the White House told The New York Times in a statement.
How bad an idea do you have to have for the Biden White House to be like, "Yo, don't go lumping us in with them."
This kind of reminds me of COVID vaccines. We've got a problem and we start throwing possible solutions at the problem without considering the problems that it may lead to.
The planet — like the human body — is complicated. One thing introduced to it can cause a domino effect of other issues.
Think of the damage invasive species can do to the environment. A couple of spotted lanternflies come over in from Asia and the next thing you know they're swarming and killing trees.
My non-expert opinion is that the planet will adapt, and if anything our attempts at intervening are going to cause bigger problems down the line.
