'Pro-Life Spiderman' Climbs Vegas Sphere, Gets Arrested
With the Super Bowl happening in the city on Sunday, all eyes have been on Las Vegas. So it makes sense that if you're trying to get eyes on your cause by way of a death-defying stunt, Sin City is the place to do it this week.
And that's precisely what one man did.
According to Daily Mail, Maison Des Champs is a pro-life activist who tried to draw attention to the issue of abortion by climbing buildings.
I'm not sure how those two are related, but we're talking about it, so I guess his methods are working.
Des Champs had previously claimed skyscrapers to get his point and raise some money for women "in crisis pregnancies," and on Wednesday, the "Pro-Life Spiderman" as he's known, set his sights on one of the most talked about buildings on the planet: Sin City's famous Sphere. He also mixed in a reference to one of the most talked about musicians on the planet.
Per Daily Mail, Des Champs released a statement saying: "Over 2,000 children meet their demise through abortion every day in America, but we've grown apathetic about it.
"We care more about seeing Taylor Swift on the kiss cam than a third of our generation that has been wiped from abortion."
Fox 5 Las Vegas captured Des Champs climbing the building with one of those cameras that local news stations plant around the city for weather broadcasts.
As you might expect, someone climbing the building that has hosted U2 concerts and was a centerpiece of the Las Vegas Grand Prix, also caught the attention of the brave men and women of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department.
I can't believe I have to say this, but I'm going to put a Jackass-style skull and crossed-crutches disclaimer on this story: don't try this at home.
It's obviously very dangerous and a headache for the police and anyone trying to get to work in that part of town.
But…
Let's not pretend that this isn't impressive. I mean, whether you agree with his pro-life message or not, you have to admit, that climbing a 366-foot-tall sphere is impressive as hell.
I can't believe it's even possible to do that. Like, where are the footholds? It's a sphere!
Des Champs said in a video taken on top of the Sphere that he had pulled the stunt to support a woman named Isabel and implored people to check out the charity Let Them Live.
The organization put out a statement of their own after Des Champs' stunt.
"While half a million football fans arrive in Las Vegas for Superbowl LVIII, Des Champs wants to shake the public into caring about the fate of unborn children in our country," the statement read.
Not sure how many ardent pro-choice will change their minds after seeing a man climb a spherical building, but like I said it was pretty impressive.
Less enthused by the stunt? The LVMPD.
They took Des Champs into custody a couple of hours after receiving the initial call.
