No, Joe Biden, Voters -- Not Just Elites -- Want You To Step Down

Joe Biden blames the elites for the ongoing push for him to step down as the Democrat nominee .

"I’m getting so frustrated by the elites — now I’m not talking about you guys — the elites in the party," Biden told MSNBC on Monday during a surprise appearance on Morning Joe. "Oh, they know so much more.’ Any of these guys that don’t think I should run, run against me. Announce for president, challenge me at the convention.

"I wanted to make sure I was right that the average voter out there still wanted Joe Biden. And I'm confident they do."

Not quite.

The elites in the party helped elect Biden as the nominee in 2020. The elites are why he was not challenged as the nominee earlier this year. Moreover, the elites are not his biggest concern. Average voters are.

According to a CBS News poll, 72% of registered voters say Biden should not run for president. Another 72% of voters believe President Biden is too old to run, per a CNN poll.

Internal data from Open Labs projects Democrats to secure only 205 electoral votes in November based on voter polling. A new Morning Consult study found that 60% of voters think Biden should "definitely" or "probably" be replaced as the Democrat presidential candidate.

As Jake Tapper noted in a scathing rebuttal to Biden, voters have been ahead of the elites in their concerns about the president's age and ability.

"President Biden seems to be trying to frame what’s going on right now as, the average voters who want him versus the elites of the Democratic Party – donors and lawmakers, and opinion makers, many of whom have serious concerns about Biden’s ability to be the candidate and have called for him to step down after that debate performance that, let’s call baffling," said Tapper.

"The reality is that the Democratic elites are mostly late to acknowledge these age and ability issues compared to the rest of the public. The elites have been forced to reckon with it after the debate just 11 days ago."

NBC News chief political analyst Chuck Todd agrees.

"Biden’s anger at ‘elites’ is a bit misplaced. Without the ‘elites,’ he would have had a serious primary foe. Without the ‘elites,’ the No Labels effort would have a compelling ticket," Todd wrote on X. "Arguably, it’s the ‘elites’ who put too much faith in Biden that got the Dems in this position."

See, Biden was already trailing Trump in most battleground states ahead of the debate. Nate Silver's model, based on on 40,000 simulations, calculated that Trump had a 66% chance of defeating Biden prior to stepping on stage.

Silver disputed the race was a "toss up."

"If the Electoral College/popular vote gap looks anything like it did in 2016 or 2020, you’d expect Biden to be in deep trouble if the popular vote is roughly tied," Silver explained.

What changed?

The Democrat elites acknowledged post-debate that they can no longer hide Biden's diminished cognitive state from voters. Hence, the likes of David Axelrod, the architect of Barack Obama's presidency, have since cast doubt on Biden's ability to win the election.

"There are certain immutable facts of life," Axelrod said in an interview with CNN. "Those were painfully obvious on that debate stage. The president just … hasn't come to grips with it. He’s not winning this race. He seems not to grasp what the big concern is that people have."

In reality, both Democrat voters and elites want Biden to step down. The Biden family and Trump supporters want him to stay.
