New Orleans Names Today "Back That Azz Up" Day In Honor Of Hit Song

It's a party in New Orleans as Mayor LaToya Cantrell has officially declared June 11 as, "Back That Azz Up Day," honoring the 25th Anniversary of the popular rap song.

Just when you thought politicians were useless! What better way to unite the people than everyone shaking their romper!

The 1999 hit song that is also known as "Back That Thang Up" was recorded by Juvenile and features a very young Lil Wayne and Mannie Fresh - all three of whom are New Orleans natives. The music video was also filmed in The Big Easy.

In the official proclamation released by Mayor Cantrell, she credited "Back That Azz Up" for helping bring more awareness to the city's rap roots as well as the massive commercial success of the song - which has been certified Gold by the RIAA.

"This legendary song has remarkably become the most played wedding song in America, uniting people across the nation in joy and celebration, and exemplifying the unifying power of music," Cantrell wrote.

Anyone who has paid attention to pop music in the past two decades is familiar with the song - it's one of the catchiest beats and immediately puts people in a good mood (for obvious reasons - just read the lyrics).

It's unclear exactly what the celebration may include - but if Mardi Gras is known for juggling one's upper torso parts, then I can reasonably deduce that Back That Azz Up Day may set the new Guinness World Record for biggest twerking party.

But who says one has to limit it to just New Orleans?! I declare the whole country celebrates Back That Azz Up Day, God knows we need it!

No word yet on if New York City will honor Kelis for her "Milkshake brings all the boys to the yard" song.
