More (Disgusting, Horrible) Bad News For Boy Scouts

The largest settlement reached for a sexual abuse case was announced on Thursday when the Boy Scouts of America were ordered to pay a total of $850 million to thousands of victims who claim to have been abused by members from the BSA.

The case involved more than 60,000 men who sued the organization for claims of child sex abuse.

According to CBS News, "More than 84,000 people are part of the lawsuit against the 110-year-old organization, which has been plagued with claims of abuse from volunteers and leaders since the 1960s."

Ken Rothweiler, an attorney representing more than 10,000 of the accusers, considered the announcement a massive victory for those looking to hold the BSA accountable after decades of stories calling out their allowance of sexual predation.

Rothweiler announced in a statement: “I am pleased that both the BSA and their local councils have stepped up to be the first to compensate the survivors. We will now negotiate with the insurers and sponsoring and chartering organizations who have billions of dollars in legal exposure, of which a substantial portion is necessary to fairly compensate the survivors."

With recent reports disclosing a massive drop in membership numbers, along with plummeting memberships for the Girls Scouts of the U.S.A., numerous headlines continue to signal a lack of confidence in the BSA's practices and code of ethics — which many perceive as a ticking clock for both groups.

In 2020, The Boy Scouts of America filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy due to increasing legal costs stemming from their sexual abuse lawsuits.
