Mickey Mantle, Michael Jordan Cards Sell For Huge Money In Latest Goldin Elite Auction

If you are a sports card collector, hopefully you had your checkbook out and a pen that was working in your hand Saturday night for the Goldin Auctions’ Elite catalog sale.

The sale set records for the industry, with two Michael Jordan rookie cards selling for over $700,000 each in the auction.

While the Jordan cards netted quite a bit of cash, it wasn't the main event on the docket, as one of 35 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle cards graded PSA 8, which set a new high bar for the grade sold for $1.6 million.

The auction netted over $30 million, a record for a single sports memorabilia auction. Over 30 lots sold for more than $200,000.

Jordan cards have become massive the last few months in the card collecting industry, as less than two months ago a 1986-87 Fleer card in a PSA 10 grade sold for $150,000.

Reports say that there are currently 316 PSA 10 Jordan rookies. If you are looking to land a box of sealed cards that could have one of the Jordan rookies in it (’86-87 Fleer), one 36-pack box sold via Goldin recently for over $370,000.

Another card of note from Saturday's sale was a rare 1925 Lou Gehrig Exhibit rookie card. The card was a PSA six with an MK designation for writing on the back.

The card moved in the auction for just over $800,000, the most ever paid for any Gehrig trading card.

The Mantle card was graded as a NM-MT 8. There is only 14 other higher-rated Mantle 1952 cards in existence.

The starting bid for the card began at $125,000, and 27 bids went forth before it finally sold for $1.6 million.
