LaVar Ball FINALLY Got Something Right As His Son Was Named NBA ROY
The NBA recently announced that Charlotte Hornets guard LaMelo Ball was crowned Rookie of the Year, the first in the franchise since Emeka Okafor (2004-05), and only the third Hornet ever (Larry Johnson won the award in 1992).
Ball received 84 first-place votes and 15 second-place votes from a global panel of 99 sportswriters and broadcasters. Players were awarded five points for each first-place vote, three points for each second-place vote and one point for each third-place vote.
The news came as no surprise to Ball’s father and ultimate hype man, LaVar, who dished up a patented GUAR-ON-TEE to TMZ Sports earlier this year that his son would win ROY. According to LaVar, LaMelo is a “winner, not a stat guy,” which is exactly what the Hornets need after five straight seasons of sub .500 basketball.
Say what you want about LaVar, but he’s going down with ‘la ship. Loyal to the bitter end. He’s the soccer dad who gets asked to leave the field for tripping the other team’s best player, and then shows back up with a Bobby Valentine mustache and a pair of oversized glasses to lurk behind the goal. Maybe even brings the kids some oranges so he can leave a peel out on the field for the other team to slip on. It’s a dog eat dog world, and LaVar and the pups are hungry. The confidence is infectious, and I love it.
He may not be sporting the best betting average with some of his predictions, but LaVar knows how to play the game, and for that, I’m here for it. After all, you only need to hit three out of ten to be in the Hall of Fame. He clearly got one right with LaMelo winning ROY, but even if the basketball predictions don’t pan out, I see a bright future for the whole Ball gang. There are lots of TikTok stars begging to get punched in the face. Maybe LaVar works the corner while middle son LiAngelo becomes the greatest boxer since Tyson—according to his dad, of course. As long as LaVar is mic’d up and hyped up, you can have my fifty dollars.
