Kevin Costner's Career Hit With Brutal Update Post-'Yellowstone' Exit

Kevin Costner's career isn't exactly booming at the moment.

Costner's time on "Yellowstone" is officially over, and it seems like it would take a miracle at this point to ever see him play John Dutton again.

One of the reasons Costner left the show was so that he could focus on his new film series "Horizon: An American Saga."

There's just one huge problem. It's flopping in a big way.

"Horizon: An American Saga" delayed after first movie bombs.

"Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 1" earned just north of the $11 million at the box office since its June 27th premiere. The film's budget is believed to be around $100 million.

That's an absolute disaster for everyone involved, and "Chapter 2" will no longer premiere August 16th as planned, according to Deadline.

"Territory Pictures and New Line Cinema have decided not to release 'Horizon: Chapter 2' on August 16 in order to give audiences a greater opportunity to discover the first installment of Horizon over the coming weeks, including on PVOD and MAX.  We thank our exhibition partners for their continued support as moviegoers across the US discover the film in its theatrical run," a New Line rep said in a statement about the decision to stop the August release of the second movie.

Now, it sounds like Costner and the studios involved are desperately hoping "Chapter 1" arriving on streaming results in a new fanbase. New viewers might result in more people seeing "Chapter 2," but it's also a longshot plan.

Very few movies become *MORE* popular once they hit streaming. Films build momentum leading up to a premiere and then hopefully peak within the first few weeks.

"Horizon - Chapter 1" never peaked. Instead, it crashed and burned. Costner left "Yellowstone" believing that his new Western series would catapult him to new levels of success.

Instead, it appears it's dragging him into a deep hole. It might be time for him to get on the phone with Taylor Sheridan and start mending some fences.

Costner took a huge risk and it appears to have blown up in his face. With "Horizon" now delayed, don't be shocked at all if part two goes straight to streaming. If that happens, it will be wildly embarrassing for the former "Yellowstone" star and a sign he made a serious miscalculation.
