Kevin Costner Takes Shot At Streaming Ahead Of New Western Premiere
Kevin Costner definitely prefers going to the theater over sitting at home and watching TV.
Costner, who may or may not be done forever on "Yellowstone", is releasing the first two chapters of his epic new Western film series "Horizon: An American Saga" this summer.
"Chapter 1" hits theaters June 28th, "Chapter 2" will premiere August 16 and production on the third movie is already underway. In total, there will be four "Horizon" films.
Kevin Costner resisted arguments to turn "Horizon" into a TV series.
Well, it turns out that some people wanted to turn the Western saga into a streaming series instead of a four-part film experience. Costner wasn't having any of it.
"I had somebody who said, ‘Look, please don’t do this, Kevin, let’s do this.’ But I’m glad about what I’m doing. I believe in the big screen. I believe in that experience. I also believe in what will come to your television. You know, I’m not one of those guys that has a director’s cut. The f*cking movie I make is the director’s cut," Costner told Empire when talking about making the saga a series of movies and not a streaming TV show.
This is the proper attitude from Costner, and it's one we're seeing less and less these days. Everything is about streaming, but nothing beats a great trip to the movie theater.
Hell, "Top Gun: Maverick" was so epic and large that it might have successfully saved Hollywood after the pandemic. Sitting at home on a Friday night to binge a TV show or crush a movie can be a lot of fun. I enjoy it as much as anyone else, but streaming has become a bit much. It's time to remember nothing beats the theater experience when it comes to large scale films.
That's what "Horizon" is, and Costner made sure people will get it as big as possible in theaters.
The (former?) "Yellowstone" star is also heavily personally invested into the films to the tune of $58 million, according to Empire. What if "Horizon" goes belly up and loses a bunch of cash? Costner doesn't appear to be sweating it.
"My hope is that I get this money back, but you know what, I’m not going to fall apart if it [doesn’t happen]. I’ll lose some things that I had valued, but they’re just things I’ve kept. I should add, I don’t want to have to ever do this again. But I don’t live my life in fear," the superstar actor explained.
I like the attitude, Kevin. I like it a lot. You either have stones or you don't, and judging from the fact he bet $58 million of his own money on this film franchise, Costner has guts of steel.
All early signs point to "Horizon: An American Saga" being epic, and I can't wait to catch "Chapter 1" and "Chapter 2" this summer. I'm glad it's in theaters and not on streaming. There's a time and place for everything, and a movie like this definitely belongs in a massive theater with a huge bowl of popcorn and an ice cold beer.
