Instagram Clout Chaser Who Posed On Cliffs Dies Via Waterfall Selfie
Hong Kong-based Instagram rising star Sofia Cheung died Saturday during a content-creation session where she was trying to get a selfie with friends at a waterfall where she would fall 16 feet to her death. According to The Sun, Cheung and friends went to Ha Pak Lai park, a popular location for hikers, to get some fresh new content at a waterfall located on Pineapple Mountain, which many people call the Grand Canyon of Hong Kong.
Cheung's friends report she lost her footing during the selfie and tumbled off the falls edge into a deep pool of water at the bottom where medics recovered her body, but it was too late. In her final Instagram post published just days before her death, Cheung wrote, "Better days are coming. They are called: Saturday and Sunday."
In her IG bio, Cheung wrote that she was into outdoor activities and noted that "Life should be fun not dumb."
Now, it's tragic what happened to Cheung, but who am I to say she didn't die doing what she loved? If someone wants to dangle off rocks and call it fun, I'm not going to argue with that. Instagram thrill seekers die all the time trying to get that content, and all I can do is blog about how the world will go on if you don't get that FIRE content.
"If it scares you, it might be a good thing to try," Cheung wrote on an April 6 post. Uh, I'm up for some craziness here and there -- I call it taking the family minivan to Michigan International Speedway during the Christmas season where I can drive around the track at 65 mph after donating canned goods to the needy. Let me tell you right now, it feels like the Chrysler's about to hit the wall or blow a tire and barrel roll down turn four.
That's my level of craziness, Instagram influencers. Those of us with our heads on straight know that our life won't be incomplete if we don't dangle off a cliff for the 'gram. But by all means, do your thing.
Who am I to tell the Brazilian woman who died late last week after falling off a cliff in Australia that she shouldn't risk her life for the 'gram? Things are so crazy with selfie deaths that there is now data on where the most selfie deaths are occurring. India currently sits atop the selfie death leaderboard with the U.S. sitting in second. Railways remain the location with the most selfie deaths, followed by cliffs and then rivers. Drownings are atop the leaderboard as the cause of death, but falling off a cliff is a very close second.
Remember, if you're going to knock yourself off to get that content, make sure you don't take any of us innocent bystanders with you.
You do you.
