Crazy Video Shows Horse Running Down Philly Highway, Still Less Of A Nuisance Than Horse And Buggies
A video showing a horse galloping down a Philadelphia highway has gone viral, although ironically, horses on public roads are a common — and at times enraging sight — about an hour and change west of the City of Brotherly Love.
The horse was seen cruising down I-95 — in the left… of course — just before early morning rush hour.
If you've ever been on the Philly anytime during rush hour, you'll know that the last thing it needs is a rogue horse doing its best Kentucky Derby impression.
According to CBS News, witnesses said it was traveling about 40 mph.
Fortunately, the horse was corralled safely and police are still looking into how it wound up on the highway
However, what was funny to me is that Philadelphia is just a quick drive from Lancaster County, known for being an Amish hotspot.
If you want to find hipster douchebags, go to Portland. If you want to see Amish, head to Lancaster.
The large Amish population means it's hard to drive anywhere without seeing a horse on the road… and it's wildly frustrating.
I grew up in Central Pennsylvania and anyone who has lived there, or even visited, has probably been late for something because a horse and buggy was trotting along the road holding everyone up.
The first time you see this, it's neat. It's like being back in time. At least until you look through the window of the buggy and Amos ruins this illusion by taking an anachronistic swig of Wawa iced tea while he drives.
That first encounter with a horse and buggy is the honeymoon phase, after that, they become the bane of your existence.
Think you know a shortcut along a country road? Well, you don't because Eli Stolzfus and Co. have errands to run in Intercourse (that's a real town. It's just don't the road from Bird In Hand), and he's not going pull off to the side of the road and dirty his wagon wheels.
You can gesticulate all you want for him to snap the reins and get a move on, but he won't. He'll just keep cruising along with a light breeze flowing threw his beard. He's not in a hurry. This is a guy who spends hours churning butter instead of buying it at a store like us English folk.
Anyway, I'm glad — as I'm sure we all are that — Philly filly cruising along the highway is okay. However, it deserves a tip of the cap for at least trying to keep up with traffic.
