We need your Father's Day grill suggestions

This week, I was talking to Sunday Screencaps editor SeanJo and since this weekend is Father's Day, we thought it would be nice to hear what you guys have planned for the grill.

Nothing says Father's Day like dad cooking his own slab of meat to perfection.

What's your plan? Show us what you've been cooking. Make meal suggestions. Help others make their Father's Day at the grill special.

Screencaps readers who've upgraded their pools

In honor of my own pool restoration, Mark shows me his own trials and tribulations from Arizona.

- Mark writes:

Joe, I love it when SC exposes something in this great country that's wildly different from your norm. Your pool liner post just about blew my mind. In ground with a vinyl liner and wood walls? Clip-in-place coping? I've lived in CA & AZ, and never heard of such a thing.

We replastered our 60-year-old pool in 2016 at our last house in CA before fleeing to AZ. The process was fascinating and incredible. We stuck with white plaster and added white travertine coping. It literally looked like a wedding cake before water was added.

Last pic is our current PebbleTec pool in Tucson. We're probably a few years away from a replaster on that and wife wants to go back to traditional plaster.

Demo to completion:

Kinsey:

We're supposed to have water in our pool today by noon. Things better go well. It's supposed to be 100 on Monday.

Restaurant suggestions

- Matt D. in Roanoke, VA writes:

If you’re looking for another great restaurant, I’d like to suggest Twin Peaks. Super cold beer, beautiful women, and some very good food. Traveling and want some comfort food? You can get POT ROAST! Good salmon, too. The Miss Twin Peaks pageant is coming up soon, or might have just happened.

Kinsey:

Matt, we were talking about old restaurant chains that are either barely hanging on or have significantly decreased in popularity, but are still alive and kicking. Like Ponderosa or TGI Friday's.

The Peaks are going strong from what I see on Instagram.

True story: I had dinner with my cousin, her husband and their then-infant daughter at a Twin Peaks years ago. Their choice. They love the food. That was my first time at the Peaks and they weren't lying. The food actually was good.

For the reader who was looking for outdoor dining table suggestions

Love the column. I saw this request yesterday and realized there were no recommendations this morning.

I have been in the patio furniture business for many years, and this is common question.  While there is not a definitive answer this may help:

  1. Concrete is super durable and will last for many years but is extremely heavy(can be a benefit) and is very susceptible to staining due to its porous nature. Heat/sun is not an issue.
  2. Polyresin (Polywood is the most recognized brand) is a great product and is super durable. It is a bit clunking by design as the material does not lend itself to fine details. It is easy to clean and typically made of recycled materials and can be left out in all weather conditions.  It is chip resistant, and the color is consistent throughout the material. Heat/Sun is not usually an issue.  It is an expensive option.
  3. Cast aluminum is a high quality and high-end option.  Great corrosion/weather resistance.  Depending on the quality of the finish, it may fade over time.  I would recommend avoiding a black or super dark finish in areas of extreme heat and direct sun. It may be hot to the touch and will be more likely to fade than lighter finishes.  Cast aluminum will last a lifetime for most people and at most you may need to have it refinished.
  4. Aluminum/aluminum tube is a less expensive option than cast aluminum but will still be very corrosion and weather resistant.  It is lighter and easier to move than cast aluminum.

The aluminum and polyresin materials require very little maintenance.  Hose it off before the party and you should be ready to go.

The concrete is super durable but may not look good if you have a lot of pollen/tree issues.  It is possible to clean and reseal like any other concrete material.

Steel is strong and inexpensive but doesn’t have the longevity of these other materials.  You really can’t leave it out in the winter snow, and you will likely have rust marks on your patio from regular summer use.  You get what you pay for…

Vending machine pizza in the United States

The last time we addressed vending machine pizza, it was in Spain or France, I believe, when Mike T. in Idaho was on a four-month vacation.

- Tim B. writes:

I remember this topic awhile back. Flying through Detroit Metro the other day and I couldn't have been more excited to try this pizza. My kids didn't believe I was actually getting it. It really wasn't very good, but I ate most of it anyway.

Screencaps readers who've invested in Mark Rober CrunchLab projects for their kids

- Rob from East Tennessee writes:

Hey Joe, you're hitting me in all the right places with this Mark Rober talk.  We learned of him from his one-off Hot Wheels video years ago, and it inspired my son to start his own little movie.  Distractions and gravity halted production for a year or so until COVID hit.  A buddy of mine randomly brought it up and said that I'd regret not using the lockdown to do something memorable with the boy, and finishing that project would be something we'd remember forever.

He was right, and it came out great.  The boy learned how to "do some hard things", I learned some video editing software, and we generally made a fantastic memory (and a not-half-bad little action short).  If you end up with a couple of Rober-inspired projects out of this that make a memory or two, consider yourself truly blessed.

Catchers with the yips

- Michael V. writes:

Hey Joe there is actually an MLB version of catcher yips that readers of a certain age might remember. Mackey Sasser was a catcher for the Mets in the late 1980s and couldn't throw the ball back to the pitcher without a series a pump fakes.

It got so bad runners would delay steal on him when he had the ball. He was a pretty good hitter but the yips wound up ruining his career. There was a documentary done about it a few years ago where Mackey revealed he had been dealing with childhood trauma that affected his play.

Sports psychologists weren't around during those days to treat those types of things. Might have extended his career.

Kinsey:

I'm old enough to remember, but I don't remember Sasser's yips. I remember his bat.

That's it this morning. I have to get a few things done before the water truck arrives later this morning. Fingers crossed these kids are about to have themselves a fun weekend and I get to sit on the patio and relax for a couple of days. It's been one helluva week.

Let's see how this goes.

Have a great Father's Day weekend and go have some summer fun.
