Will Charlie Condon help change anything?

Charlie Condon was selected No. 3 by the Colorado Rockies.

- Rob in NC shares:

Charlie Condon was the Golden Spikes award  winner this year in college baseball. He will go top 3 in the MLB draft this week. He played multiple sports in high school, and almost chose D3 football over walking on at UGA for baseball.

Do you think his success will help youth baseball parents realize that their kids can play multiple sports in high school and still excel in college baseball?

Kinsey:

I was under the assumption that most baseball players play other sports, but maybe I'm naive with that assumption. Based on the quick research I've done on Condon, the big story here is that Charlie had a passion for baseball and bet on himself as a walk-on at Georgia, which was the only school that offered him a shot.

"It was a hard pill to swallow when I first got [redshirted] because I felt like I had proven myself and proved I could be a contributor," Condon told ESPN. "Once I accepted it, I realized there was probably going to be a silver lining somewhere along the way. I knew there was going to be a spot for me, if I trusted the process and kept getting better."

And it gets better.

Charlie didn't run from Georgia when the school went through a coaching change. He stayed and now he's a legend.

I would say that parents would be better off having their kids read this post and to ask themselves how they can be more like Charlie Condon.

Did I make a mistake not loading the bases in the bottom of the 7th in Saturday's championship game?

- Mike McC wants me to look forward, not back, on my coaching decisions in Saturday's 12U championship:

LOVE the stories Joe...way to go!

I wouldn't have walked the kid to set up the force because you don't want to put Sequoia in the spot where a walk ends the season.  Even if he's a strikethrower, that's a tough spot if he throws ball 1.  If his nickname was Maddux - maybe.

Paul Skenes to the Yankees…eventually

This is in reference to my analysis that the Pirates are protecting Skenes' arm so he's not damaged goods down the road

- Cheesehead Paul writes:

That's why I'm not a big fan of MLB, the small market teams are just farm clubs for the big boys. The "luxury" tax is not punitive enough... need a cap similar to the NFL but the MLB players would never allow for that!

Kinsey:

Trust me, as a Reds fan, I understand your sentiments. I'm just lucky to have lived through a World Series victory, to attend Game One and to remember some of it. The likelihood it'll ever happen again in my lifetime is slim.

Random thoughts on a Tuesday morning in mid-July when readers have hunkered down for the summer

- Pete from Arizona writes:

Do we really need A.I.? We already have Natalee, Livvy Dunne, Liz Hurley and the Hawk Tuah girl, what can A.I. really do to make things better in that arena?

Don’t all men look at the Yoga pictures on Screencaps and try to figure out what the best options are for that position?

With all the infiltration of the crazy left into news sites, was wondering if your readers can let us know some regular newspaper sites that still give old school type news and are not just crazy left mouthpieces? We already have Outkick, the New York Post and Fox. What else is out there?

I also did the Little League and club coach thing you just finished when my kids were younger. Loved it, miss it, enjoy it while you do it. It goes fast, but it is 100% worth all the time with your kids and the effort to do it. My daughter went on to play D-1 softball as a pitcher and I coached her not only in Little League through 12 but also in club for a time as well.

She did both softball and soccer until about 14 when she went full softball pitching. It was the right thing to keep her in other sports at the younger ages. I saw kids who went club softball at 10, were really, really good and had D-1 scholarship offers by 14 but quit softball at 15 because they got too burned out. They never picked up a glove again. If you are good and put in the work, you can get where you want to go without traveling 20 times a year at age 10. It’s not needed.

Love the Tom Seaver reference to your pitchers. Seaver was my boyhood hero growing up. My dad, who was a LEGAL immigrant farm worker his whole life, saved up money and drove us 3 hours to a Mets game one time when I was a kid. Seaver did not pitch that game but that was my first baseball game. Still remember it even though the Mets lost.

Speaking of Tom Seaver, never met him until I literally ran into him at a Mets-Diamondbacks game in Phoenix at 40 something years old. My wife and I were walking though the concourse, and this guy came quickly at a 90-degree angle from the path I was going, and we literally ran into each other. He was broadcasting the game and was trying to get to the bathroom during a break. I stood there completely frozen.

In front of me was my idol and I struggled mightily to just talk at all. My wife is looking at me like the what the heck is wrong with you? I blathered some words and told him he was my idol growing up and I used to track all his stats on sheets of paper. He was very nice, I got to shake his hand and then he went on his way. I stood there trying to soak it all in. My wife was still looking at me like I was a complete moron. I had to explain to her that all of a sudden, I felt like I was back to being a 10-year-old kid in that moment instead of a 40-year-old man.

Paul Skenes first words upon hearing he was starting in the All-star game: ‘Thank you Sir’. Says allot right there about what that kid is all about.

You had a reference to Al Bundy the other day in one of the screencaps. Got me to thinking, who are your readers top 5-10 favorite most iconic Hollywood characters out there to the point if you ever saw the real person somewhere, you would instinctively call them by their characters name and may or may not even know their real name and will forever associate them with that character. For me, Al Bundy, Kelly Bundy, Jason Bourne, John Wick, Daenerys Targaryen – the mother of Dragons, John Snow, Jack Bauer, Captain Kirk and Spock are some that come to mind for me right off the top.

Keep up the great work, have a great day!

Kinsey:

Another satisfied Purple pillow user

*Disclaimer: #notsponsored

** Disclaimer: I bought my own Purple pillow

***Disclaimer: Don't go buying the Purple pillow and then blaming me if it doesn't help you sleep

- Mike T. in Idaho emails:

After seeing Joe talk about his satisfaction with the Purple Pillow, I decided to do a little research on them. Checking out both Amazon and the Purple Pillow website the reviews were very, very good!

My issue is my neck. It sounds and feels like a box of rocks: snap, crackle and pop!
After seeing several reviews address neck issues I decided to try one, $170 from Amazon. I did get a smaller size than they suggested as my previous pillows were smaller.

The Pillow arrived and after 5 nights sleep I couldn’t be more satisfied! Neck is much, much better and I’m sleeping very, very well.

It’s a 10 of 10 for me, Thanks Joe

The view from Taiwan

- Scott in Taiwan writes:

Long time reader and fan.

Took these pictures while on a short road trip around the top of Taiwan.

They are from Repulse Bay Seaside Park on the northwest coast of Taiwan. It was low tide so you can see the reef in the distance that created a big tide pool that people were playing in.

No filters were used or photo editing was done. They were taken using an old Samsung phone, so the colors are what they were at the time.

I like the way people are silhouetted in them.

Hope you enjoy them.

I can't remember. Did the foil actually keep it cold for five hours until the field trip lunch stop?

I'm glad there are others out there who feel this way

Lee D. in Tampa says this is why he doesn't fish

Here's a Pizza Hut you don't see very often

- John from St. Marys, GA checks in:

I cant believe I forgot about this in my Email about St Marys.......  We have a brick and mortar Pizza Hut !!!

The Johnson City, TN Screencaps group got together again

- Galen shares:

We had our second get together Saturday morning at Eggs Up Grill in beautiful Johnson City TN. We welcomed Tim and Chris as first timers and had a great brunch.

Joe, thanks for sharing your platform where a group of strangers can meet and share the  common bonds of Screencaps! These are some intelligent, thoughtful, and fun guys to talk to.

L to R: Chris B (The Chemist), Tim A (The Vet),

Galen (The Retiree), and Bryan H (The Umpire)

Kinsey:

The big news here is that the crew continues to grow. I might be wrong, but I think the official group is up to at least 7 or 8 members. Well done, fellas. I would like to hear some topics out of these meetings. What was a hot topic?

That's it for this mid-July Tuesday. It's going to be in the low 90s today, which is normal, and then it's going down to a high of 77 and sunny on Thursday. That might go down as one of the most pleasant July mowing days in NW Ohio history.

Go have a great day.
